Research Abstract

地震波速度トモグラフィ法により、日本列島下の地震波速度構造を推定した。その結果、太平洋プレートの沈み込みによって生じた上昇流であると解釈される低速度領域が上部マントルにイメージングされた。一方、上昇流の流れの方向を反映している異方性構造を推定した結果、異方性の向きは太平洋プレートの沈み込み方向にほぼ平行であることが明らかになった。これらの結果は、海洋性プレートの沈み込みによってマントル対流が生じていることを示す重要な地震学的観測事実である。
