Outline of Annual Research Achievements

地下文化遺産を構成する岩石や岩盤は、多くの場合、亀裂、剥離、材料の損失、表面の変化など、何らかの劣化の兆候を示している。本研究課題「歴史的価値のある地下空間の風化調査」で対象とした関東地方の3つの地下文化遺産(田谷の洞窟、吉見百穴、大谷石地下採掘場跡)においても例にもれず、劣化のリスクとその要因を、水―岩石相互作用の観点から明らかにした。
地下文化遺産を構成している岩石や岩盤あるいは土層中には、雨水や地表水が浸透にともない、構成鉱物から成分が溶解する。溶出した成分(可溶性イオン)は、地下水等の移動や毛細管上昇、もしくは蒸発の間に結合し、塩として析出する。この溶解と結晶化は、周期的なプロセスとして相転移サイクルに発展する。このような繰り返しの現象が岩盤表面ないし表層付近の岩石内部における間隙内で発生することで、相変化にともなう体積変化とその結果として生じる歪みにより剥離や崩壊をもたらすことがわかった。
検出された塩のほとんどは硫酸塩であり、石膏(CaSO4・2H2O)が全調査サイトで最も広く析出していた。また、テナルダイト(Na2SO4)などの硫酸ナトリウム類、アルノーゲン(Al2(SO4)3)などの硫酸アルミニウム類、エプソマイト(MgSO4・6H2O)などの硫酸マグネシウム類、およびこれらの複合塩も検出された。このような二次的に生成した塩類鉱物の析出には、温度や湿度などの析出環境の因子と地下地盤の岩質が影響を与えていることも確認された。
いずれの地下文化遺産も、坑道の岩盤表面の剥離などの劣化要因は、水-岩石反応に起因する物理化学的作用に伴う塩類風化であることが示された。劣化した地下文化遺産を保存修復する際には、地質条件と環境条件の観点から地下文化遺産がおかれている立地環境を精査し、個別の事情に即した対策をとるべきである。
