Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In this study, we investigated how the literary style of the colloquial Chinese version of the Bible was composed based on its grammatical features and the translation process, based on which built an integrated hypothesis about its translation procedure. The basic material in this study is editions of the Gospels published in the middle of the nineteenth century. In this study, focusing on the syntactic structures and characteristic word forms appearing in passages, we first compared different editions in the same language/dialect of Chinese diachronically, and contemporary editions of the Chinese version in different languages/dialects cross-sectionally. Next, we clarified the characteristics of the colloquial language reflected in the Chinese translation of the Bible. Finally, we analyzed the differences and interrelationships between the editions and posited hypotheses about the working procedure of the translation into Chinese.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
