| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
<Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships> Based on the result of the existing and on-going experiments, this research concludes that the existing rules and principles such as the liability for the ship’s collision or shipowner's limitation of liability can be maintained even to the activities of maritime autonomous surface ships. However, the function of remote controllers must be further analyzed and depending on the conclusion of the analysis, the existing law including international conventions may need to be revised.
<Polar Shipping> Based on the scientific data on polar shipping, the research concludes that it is highly desired to implement effective regulations on the civil liability for marine pollution caused by commercial shipping in polar area and standards for seaworthiness unique to polar shipping. It also argues that the regulation may better be introduced by “soft law” instead of hard law such as international conventions.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
自律航行船等と極域航行の問題は、技術的な検討は着実に進められているものの、その重要性にもかかわらず、学界のみならず実務においても、法律家による議論は十分なされていない。そのような中で、民事責任を中心に自律航行船等と極域航行に関する法律関係を本格的に検討した本研究は、非常に新しい試みであるといえる。そして、既存の海事法制のうち，特に新たな手当が必要な問題と、そうではない問題とを切り分け、前者について、どのような内容及び形式のルールメイキングが必要かについて一定の結論が得られたことは、学術的にはもとより、社会的にも重要な意義を有するものである。
