Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study has mainly three achievements:(1)Intervention offering the workshop in which girls and their parents could connect with female role model, (2)Phone-based survey to explore the effects of COVID-19 induced lockdown and school closure on children, (3)Empirical analysis on female labor force participation (LFP) in the patriarchal South Asian society.
(1) originally hypothesized that, in the patriarchal society, the intervention to girls with parents, but not girls alone, would be effective to enhance girls’ LFP. However, the empirical results show that the intervention to girls alone significantly and strongly enhanced their LFP. (2) showed that during the school closure, girls' time spent on household chores increased substantially more than boys', and the risk of female child marriage has increased among the households who had financial shock due to COVID-19 lockdown. (3) showed that increased girls’ agency, but not their academic or vocational skills, enhanced their LFP.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
