Outline of Final Research Achievements

This research project attempted to construct a high-resolution and high-frequency monitoring system for coastal morphology using big-data assimilation approaches. The massive coastal morphologic data, which is the basis of the system, was assembled by integrating information obtained from remote sensing and big data of fishing boats generated through collaboration between coastal fishers and civil engineers. Radar remote sensing and observations clarified the dynamics and characteristics of shoreline position changes and sediment supplied from rivers to the sea. A one-line model reenacted changes in coastal morphology, and a particle filter with the big data analyzed temporal changes in bathymetry.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究で活用する漁船ビッグデータは,沿岸漁業とのコラボレーションで得られるビッグデータを基にした世界的にも類を見ない特徴的なものであり,これを高度に利活用する先駆的な研究である.本手法によって生成される浅い海域の地形情報は,沿岸域の土砂や砂浜の管理手法を飛躍的に効率化することができる.ここで提案する費用対効果が高い海底地形モニタリング手法は,沿岸域の開発と海岸侵食に直面する開発途上国での技術展開も期待されている.また,得られる分析データを無償で公開して地理・地形情報を誰でも利用可能できるようになり,津波シミュレーション(防災)や環境・国土保全,漁業などの産業活性・創出に対する波及が期待できる.
