| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Tokuma Katayama is one of the first architects in Japan. This study focuses on the entire scope of Katayama's and the Ministry of the Imperial Household Agency 's work on the former Crown Prince's Palace (Akasaka Palace), Hyokeikan, the main building of the Kyoto National Museum, the main building of the Nara National Museum, etc., and analyzes in detail their design methods based on historical documents from the Imperial Archives and various museums at the time of construction. The conclusion is that the construction project by Katayama was not limited to the design aspects, but also included new technologies and construction systems, and it reveals how Meiji Japan acquired the fundamentals of modern architecture cultivated in the Western culture and climate and adapted them to those of Japan.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本格的な様式建築の建設を可能とするための、構造・設備の新技術の導入、石、煉瓦、金属、ガラス、セメント等の新材料の調達や加工の実現、現場管理を含めた施工体制の確立といった片山と宮内省内匠寮の取り組みが明らかになったことで、様式建築研究に留まらない宮内省内匠寮による建設事業の研究の必要性が明らかになった。そのような問題意識を持ち、史料を詳細に分析することで、「明治日本が西洋の風土で培われた近代建築の基礎をいかに習得したか、日本の風土に適応させたか」の観点から明治の近代建築建設事業の役割を明らかにすることは、日本の近代化を解明するうえで新しい視点をもたらすと考えられる。
