Outline of Final Research Achievements |
A bottom-up method for micropatterning topological defects in nematic liquid crystals (NLCs) is explored. In this study, we used ultraviolet/ozone treatment in order to align the director field of NLCs on a polysiloxane surface. A micropattern formation of topological defects was observed for various types of NLCs. The effect of the accumulated ions contained in NLCs was examined. Particularly, by applying area-selective surface modification, it is found that the uniform micropattern can be observed over a large area. The idea enabled to generate different types of patterns, which could be useful for further optical studies.
