Outline of Final Research Achievements

The nature of memory engrams in animal brain remains unclear. Using the leading-edge fluorescent imaging techniques for synaptic plasticity and membrane potential, this project has aimed to clarify the population of activity-dependent synaptic plasticity encoding memory through changing information processing in individual neurons and circuits.
Several lines of live-imaging experiments enabled by our own technical improvements have succeeded in unraveling the spatial information about the functional plasticity in neurons, which will eventually make it possible to fluorescently label the LTD synapses during learning in live animals. In addition, I unexpectedly found a novel long-term plasticity of neuronal information processing at axonal regions after the induction of plasticity at dendrites.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

動物における記憶や学習の仕組みを理解するには、複雑な神経回路の中でどのような機能変化の集合体が重要か、を明らかにする必要があり、その実現には幅広い時空間スケールで神経細胞集団の精緻な機能解析を行わなければいけない。本研究で確立した、神経細胞の電気活動や記憶・学習の基礎過程であるシナプス可塑性を光で捕捉する技術は、そうした記憶・学習が実際の生きた動物の中でどのように起こり、それが神経回路の情報の流れをどのように変化させるのかについて理解することを可能にする。したがって、本研究成果は、動物の状況に応じた環境適応の根本メカニズムの理解に繋がる重要な意義をもっている。
