Outline of Final Research Achievements

In this study, we isolated predators of microcystin-producing cyanobacteria, closely related predators regardless of the region, and isolated novel predators. In addition, we developed an aquatic remediation technology using these predators, their symbiotic microcystin-degrading bacteria, and algal-bacterial granular sludge. We found that predators that are not symbiotic with microcystin-degrading bacteria are affected by microcystin toxicity, and that microcystin acts as a defense mechanism for the producing cyanobacteria. Furthermore, our results suggest an increase in microcystin predation pressure by symbiotic bacteria. This study has created an analytical tool for constructing aquatic environmental remediation technologies that can be used in the field, focusing on symbiotic bacteria as predators, and aquatic purification technologies that can be used in the field.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

学術的意義:本研究において、捕食者は共生ミクロシスチン分解菌が十分量保持されていない場合、ミクロシスチンの毒性影響を受けることを解明した。またミクロシスチン曝露下において、共生ミクロシスチン分解菌の細胞密度が高い程、捕食者の増殖促進を示唆する結果を得た。加えて、捕食者を解析するための新たな解析ツールを開発した。
社会的意義:水源池の富栄養化に伴い有毒物質を産生する藍藻類が,浄水処理障害や淡水養殖産業に被害をもたらし,安全・安心な淡水資源の確保や利用のための対策が急務となっている。本研究は,淡水資源を確保できる技術開発であり,気候変動による藻類汚濁水域の発生・拡大に対応できる技術となり得る。
