Based on the data on so-called Altaic languages, this research project aimed at investigating various relations between: (a) language change and immigration, (b) language change and urbanization, and (c) language change and the introduction of a religion.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
現代世界にあっては、話者数の少ない言語は消滅の危機に瀕しており、6千とも7千とも言われる言語数は、急速に減少しつつある。消滅せずとも、諸言語は種々の変化を見せている。他方、諸言語を取り巻く環境も急速に変化しつつある。言語変化と環境の関係を探究することは、人文学の重要な課題のひとつであると言える。本研究課題は、アルタイ諸言語と呼ばれる言語を対象に、「人の移動」「都市化」「宗教の導入」という3つの観点から、言語変化と環境の関係を探った。
