Outline of Annual Research Achievements

ガラス転移をめぐる大きな論争の種は、液体の構造が粘性の増大に重要な働きをしているか否かという点である。液体を構成する粒子間に引力と斥力の作用が存在するLennard-Jonesポテンシャルと、その斥力部分だけを取り出したWCAポテンシャルで相互作用する2つの液体のシミュレーション結果を比べると、X線などで観察される構造因子は全く変わらないのに、ダイナミクス(粒子運動)の遅くなり方は2つの系で大きく異なることが報告され、ダイナミクスを決める上で構造が重要ではない証拠と考えられてきた。
今回、我々が過去に導入した「局所的なパッキング能が高い粒子配置構造」を用いて2つの系の構造を比べたところ、実は構造が大きく異なることが明らかになり、引力相互作用が液体の構造を大きく変え、その結果、ダイナミクスにも多大な影響を与えていることを発見した。今回の成果は従来の常識に反し,液体の構造を決めるには2体相関では不十分であり、3体以上の多体相関が不可欠であることを示したといえる。本研究の成果は、液体の構造を記述するには角度情報が不可欠であること、さらには、長年の謎であったガラス転移に伴う粘性の増大が、液体の構造化にあることを示唆しており、液体の理解に大きなインパクトを与えるものと期待される(Phys. Rev. Lett.に発表)。
また、コロイド系の一粒子レベル観察により、結晶多形を示す系の結晶化過程において、どのように最終構造が形成されるかを明らかにすることに成功した。液体の中でできては消える局所的に安定な構造の存在下で、結晶化初期には、さまざまな結晶構造を内包した結晶の核が形成されるが、これらの構造が競合しながら、時間とともにより安定な結晶が徐々に発達し安定化されていく機構を明らかにした点に新規性がある(Sci. Adv.に発表)。
