Outline of Annual Research Achievements

チョローラ層出土の類人猿化石の評価のため、国内で資料分析と比較研究を進めると共に、研究代表者がエチオピア国立博物館を複数回訪問し、エチオピア人共同研究者のY. Beyene博士とB. Asfaw博氏と共同活動を再開した。本研究のフィールド調査により主として発掘で得たBetichaサイトの化石資料全158点についてクリーニング、接合、補強等の上、部位、分類群、タフォノミー情報についてデータ化し、動物化石関連のデータベースとそれに基づく総合評価を更新した。資料分析においては、チョローラピテクスはじめ各分類群のエナメル質試料の炭素と酸素の安定同位体分析を実施した。また、Ar/Ar法の年代測定を６測定追加し、全20測定について古地磁気とフィールド情報と統合・最終化し、チョローラ層の下位から上位にわたる精密な層位年代枠組みを確立した。これまでの結果の疑問点（K-Ar法年代値の一部）を解消し、下位の固結凝灰岩の主要層が約950万年前、タイプ化石層準は約855万年前の火山灰の直下、類人猿化石層準は790万年前、上位化石層は700から710万年前であることを明らかにした。類人猿化石の評価については、エチオピア国立博物館にて化石資料の補修補強、観察、計測と写真記録をさらに進めると共に、ケニアのナカリ出土の1000万年前の類人猿化石との比較を進め、特に切歯、犬歯、小臼歯において形態的類似点が多いことを見出した。また、指骨化石のオリジナル標本の追加クリーニングによって細部形態の追加情報が得られ、それを元に破損している関節面の仮想修復作業を進めた。並行して、現生種とアルディピテクス・ラミダス等の化石種の四肢骨形態の比較解析について、特に足骨と手骨を中心に進めた。

Reason

チョローラ層各層準の年代の精緻化が十分進展し、類人猿化石の推定年代の信頼度をさらに増すことができた。また、上位化石層準の年代を700万から710万年前と確定すると共に、ほぼ同年代の化石包含層が20キロ以上にわたり存在することが明らかとなった。この新たな知見は、最古の人類化石と同様の年代値ともつ化石包含層の広がりを示すため重要である。一方、エナメル質の安定同位体組成の分析を終えたものの、得られた結果の比較評価については今後の進捗が必要である。また、チョローラピテクス化石の評価については、ナカリ化石との比較のみならず、周辺分類群を網羅する比較解析に拡張し、特にチョローラピテクスとナカリピテクス、ウラノピテクスの３属が同一分岐群であるかさらに検証する必要がある。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

本年度の研究により、チョローラピテクスは、ナカリピテクス、ウラノピテクスの３属に共通する形態特徴を特定することができたが、３属が同一分岐群を形成するかどうか、分岐分析的にさらに検証する必要がある。また、指骨化石の評価については、チョローラピテクスと系統的に近縁と思われるゴリラとウラノピテクスと、アフロピテクスなどの四足歩行型の中新世類人猿との比較をさらに詰める必要がある。これらの結果を踏まえ、最終結論を導出する。
