Outline of Annual Research Achievements

世界最古の化石記録が報告されるオーストラリア・ノースポール地域の形成環境を解き明かす上で当該地域の大半を占める緑色岩の年代情報が鍵となる。そこで、本研究は緑色岩中に普遍的に含まれるチタン石に焦点をあて、最新鋭のレーザー技術および高い感度を誇る誘導結合プラズマ質量分析計(ICPMS)を組み合わせたウラン(U)-鉛(Pb)年代測定技術の確立に取り組んでいる。本年度の研究実施状況としてはチタン石・U同位体比分析技術の確立に力を入れてきた。
対象となる太古代試料は35億年前と非常に古いため高精度なU-Pb同位体比分析技術を要すことに加えて、その年代計算にはU同位体比が不可欠となる。U同位体比は地球上で非常に均質とされ、多くの先行研究にて238U/235U比= 137.818が定数であることが仮定されている一方、熱水活動が関与したチタン石について大きなU同位体比のバリエーションが報告されている。そのため高精度チタン石U-Pb年代測定を進めていく上で、238U/235U比についても同時取得する必要性が生じた。、そこで、申請者らはU-Pb年代測定と並行してレーザーサンプリングによる局所U同位体比測定技術の確立にも取り組んだ。分析した試料はU-Pb年代測定用に準備した4種類のチタン石スタンダードである。分析したチタン石の238U/235U比は137.818に比べて系統的に低い値(1‰前後)を示すことに加えて、FCTについては1%以上の大きなバリエーションが見つかった。この結果はチタン石のU同位体比が不均質であり、高精度U-Pb年代測定を実現する上でU同位体比分析が不可欠となることを意味する。今回、局所U同位体比分析より得られた精度は１‰ほどであり、太古代試料へ応用する上でも十分な分析精度が達成されている。こちらの分析結果については既に論文にまとめ終え、国際誌にて公表されている。
