Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Le Journal de Shanghai, a french newspaper published in the French Concession in Shanghai during 1927-1945, has been running many important articles on both Chinese and Japanese literature, art, music, movies, theaters, customs, etc. The authors such as Charles Grosbois (1893-1972), Claude Riviere(1882-1972), Sung-Nien Hsu(徐仲年or徐頌年, 1904-1981)and his wife Suzanne (Suzanne Roubertie, 1903-? ), Kikou Yamata(1897-1975)greatly contributed to these articles and were the key persons as well in promoting cultural exchanges. Nowadays however, even Shanghai history scholars know little about the newspaper neither these persons. I tried to list and discuss these articles at first, then investigate the important authors’ backgrounds. Based on French, Chinese and Japanese historical documents, I tried to describe the facts in detail, and shed light on the functioning of a cultural network between Paris, Shanghai, and Kyoto or Tokyo during the first half of the 20th century.
