Outline of Final Research Achievements

This research aims to develop Japanese students’ strategic competence (SC) in collaborative exercises with students in Asian universities via online lessons. Japanese students undertook group discussion with their classmates, then tried the same discussion with Singaporean or Thai students using ICT. Observing those students, the percentage of Japanese student comments was higher than that of the other two groups. This was due in part to Singaporean students having high SC and employing turn-taking, so Japanese students had more chances to speak. In contrast, Thai students, similar to Japanese, are not confident in English, so Japanese students found that they had to lead group work. Japanese students analyzed the Thai students’ discussion video before the collaborative lessons, and then exhibited SC in the group discussion. From these results, it can be deduced that the Japanese students improved SC with Asian students by analyzing collaborative group discussions.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

海外とオンライン共同授業を行う際に、交流する国は英語母語話者を対象にする傾向がある。しかし、アジア圏のさまざまな国の大学と共同授業をすることで、異なるアクセントに触れることができるだけでなく、その国独特の文化や日常生活での英語使用の頻度も知ることができる。その結果、日本人学生は交流相手国の特徴を捉えながらその攻略法を考え、コミュニケーション能力のうち方略的能力が養われると考える。したがって、英語母語話者だけでなく、第二外国語として英語を利用する国や、日本と同じように外国語として英語を使う国の学生とオンラインでグループ活動を繰り返し行い、よりグローバルな人材育成をしていく必要があると考える。
