Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study investigated learning through communicative experiences in English. The effects of language activities at the Self Access Center (SAC) were examined from several perspectives. Both quantitative and qualitative research was conducted. The result of quantitative research indicated that a group of 18 students that spent more hours than the average students in communicative activities at the SAC, showed a significant increase in speaking fluency. In a separate case study with students, PAC analysis was used to extensively explore the transformations in attitudes and behaviors of these three who either 1) experienced SAC activities, 2) participated in short-term study abroad program, or 3) participated in both. The results of this case study suggested that students who experienced small successes in SAC's English activities, regardless of their overseas experience, have become more confident in speaking English and having interpersonal relationships.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

近年、大学が設置する体験型のSACや大型の体験型研修施設などで、留学以外でも英語がコミュニケーションのツールとして使用される環境に身を置くことが可能になった。短期留学による異文化体験は貴重であるが、高額な費用がかかる。大学が設置するSACは無料で卒業まで継続して利用できるため、価値が高い。本研究で、SACの英語活動に継続的に参加すると、英語への苦手意識が払拭されたり、異文化間のコミュニケーションの積極性が培われたりすることが示された。短期の語学留学を、より有意義なものとする点でも優れていることもわかり、本研究は日本人の英語力の向上に大きく貢献する。
