Outline of Final Research Achievements

In official documents not previously scrutinised fully, diplomatic representatives active in Japan in the two decades from 1850 reported to their home government. By analysing these documents, this study investigates how French diplomacy during the Second Empire planned to make contact with little-known cultures in order to understand them. There is no doubt that through the period concerned, France, unlike Great Britain, continued to regard the Shogun in Edo as the ‘Emperor of Japan’, although how the two designations came to be perceived as equivalent remains uncertain. Thus, further investigation is required of the sources underlying this perception, which could go back to the views held by Jesuit missionaries in the late sixteenth century.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
