| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究成果の学術的意義は、以下の点にある。(1)無数の船乗りのナショナルな物語に回収しきれない多様な姿やアイデンティティを掘り起こし、(2)彼ら独自の会的ネットワーク、心性、文化空間を再構築し、(3)これまで過渡に陸中心的なイメージで叙述されてきた近世イングランドの歴史像について、よりバランスのとれた多様な姿を描くことができた点にある。
また方法論的には、これまであまり注目されてこなかった、船員たちが航海途上で作成した船上遺言書について、厳密な史料論的検討を行った上で検討し、船員たちに語らせることに成功した点は、近年注目されているエゴ・ドキュメント研究の成果としても重要な意義がある。
