Outline of Final Research Achievements

One of the potential contributions of this research is that we have successfully employed a multi-method approach with Process-tracing and Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) in a retail study setting. While the former proved effective in exploring the causal mechanism by which a retailer develops from a humble merchant to a hegemonic player in the Big Middle (BM), the latter helped us empirically test the statements by Levy et al. (2005) regarding the possible pathways to the BM. According to them, a retailer can reach the BM by becoming a market specialist or a product specialist. Based on the data collected from the customers of a Japanese specialist retailing giant, we have tested the latter proposition with QCA procedures. It turned out that the BM the retailer has achieved stands on an aggregation of various heterogeneous market segments. The finding verifies part of the BM hypotheses and elaborates the underlying logic for a product specialist retailer reaching the BM.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究では、覇権市場において支配的地位を確立した小売企業に着目し、その顧客へのサーベイをもとに質的比較分析(QCA)で解析をおこなった。小売業態展開論の有力モデルにLevy ら(2005)のBig Middleがある。小売業者が覇権市場に到達する2種の経路のうちのひとつは製品専門化であるという。本研究では、この中範囲の理論仮説の検証と精緻化をおこなうことを目指した。Levyらのいう専門型小売業者の覇権市場の実態は、複数のセグメントの顧客が異なる経路(原因条件の組み合わせ)によって当該小売業者を愛顧することで、大きな集計個別市場が生まれていることとして説明しうる状況があることが明らかになった。
