| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Rapid rural population decline is a universal phenomenon. In 2016, France implemented a regional restructuring, merging 22 regions into 13 regions. France, like Japan, is intensifying its policy development for regional revitalization. Accordingly the choice between consolidating or maintaining small public schools in rural areas facing population decline has become a policy issue.
In France, small schools traditionally exist in small communes (basic municipal units). Small communes and small schools are numerous. From the end of the 19th century until today, public primary schools have been at the heart of the life of the rural population. The survival of small schools means the survival of rural communities.
Through field research in rural areas, we have elucidated the background and reality of the existence of small scale schools.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
近年、フランスでも急激な社会変化と過疎化に悩む農村地域では公立小規模校の存続か学校統廃合かの選択が迫られてきた。19世紀の公立初等学校の多くが単級学校から始まった歴史を持つフランスでは、今日も「小さなコミューン」のもとに「小さな学校」が多数存続している。農村地域にある公立学校は、その長い歴史と共に、農村地域の住民の観念、感情、価値観を支える「農村文化」の源となってきた。本研究は、その観点から農村学校の歴史や教育方法を検討し、人々の暮らしの核として存立してきた小さな学校が農村文化を担う住民の幸福度と深く関わっていることの検証を目的とし、農村学校のもつ教育的・社会的・文化的意義の再考を促した。
