Outline of Final Research Achievements

The purpose of this study was to clarify the effects of reading aloud in English reading instruction from cognitive and brain science perspectives. The study investigated vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension, reading speed, and brain activity of Japanese university students after they continue reading aloud and after they continue reading silently, and compare the learning effects of reading aloud and reading silently. This representative has investigated the effects of extensive reading cognitively and neuroscientifically, and concluded that exposure to a large amount of simple English sentences over a long period of time is effective. If reading aloud is shown to be effective, it may lead to an improvement in reading ability without taking as much time as extensive reading. The results of this study showed neuroscientific view of the effectiveness of reading aloud instruction.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
