Outline of Annual Research Achievements

北半球の寒冷化傾向が観測される中で、気候モデルによるその再現ができていない(McCusker et al., ; Mori et al., 2019)。中緯度の寒冷化が地球温暖化の影響を受けた北極圏からの寒気流出の強まりによるものではないかと考えた。これまでの研究成果から北極の温暖化に伴う成層圏循環の変化が北極域から中緯度帯への寒気流出へ強く影響することがわかってきた(Nakamura et al., 2015; 2016a; 2016b; 2019)。そこで、成層圏大気変動による対流圏循環への影響を組み入れて、北半球冬季の寒冷化傾向を説明するための、高い再現性をもつモデル構築を目的とする。そのためには成層圏における力学、化学放射過程の包括的理解が必要となる。
先行研究では成層圏力学過程について一定の理解は得られたものの(Nakamura et al., 2016a)、化学放射過程については不十分であった。これは成層圏オゾンに関する化学反応式は複雑であり、気候モデルに組み込むことは、開発・計算コストの増大を伴うため、評価が難しいからである。本研究では、力学過程の評価に用いた気候モデル(AFES)に、ドイツ、アルフレッドウェゲナー研究所で開発された成層圏オゾンに関する高速なモジュール(SWIFT)を組み込んだ。これにより大幅にコストを削減し、北極の気候変動の評価に十分耐えうる積分年数で実験を行った。
北極温暖化に対する気候応答実験を、力学的変化に伴う成層圏オゾンによる太陽放射フィードバックを表現したものとしないものとで行った。その結果、北極温暖化に伴う惑星波活動の振幅が放射フィードバックにより強化されることで、成層圏極渦の歪みの増大とそれによる寒気流出が強まることがわかった。このような過程を考慮することで、日本の寒波や豪雪の要因の分析に役立つことが期待される。
