Outline of Final Research Achievements

For many animals, olfaction is essential for survival. Olfactory perception begins when odor molecules in the environment bind to olfactory receptors (ORs). OR genes form the largest multigene family in mammals. In this study, we aimed to elucidate how genomes respond to environmental changes by using genomic data from various mammals and identifying orthologous gene groups to conduct a molecular evolutionary analysis. This analysis revealed OR genes that respond to specific environmental factors.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本課題では、主として以下の2点を明らかにし、論文として国際誌に発表した。(1)24種の多様な霊長類のOR遺伝子をオーソログ遺伝子群を用いて解析し、OR機能遺伝子数の差異は、鼻の形態および食性の違いによって説明されることを示した。特に、果実食の霊長類は嗅覚に優れ、葉食の霊長類は嗅覚が劣ることがわかった。(2)齧歯類の性フェロモンであるESP遺伝子ファミリーの起源と進化についての解析を行った。その結果、ESP遺伝子が、血中のヘモグロビンをコードする遺伝子に由来することを明らかにした。
