Outline of Final Research Achievements

Superoxide can induce reperfusion injury after cerebral ischemia. However, subclinical superoxide load may give cerebral protection through preconditioning mechanism. Subclinical superoxide is easily provided by commercially available air purifiers. We exposed rats to subclinical superoxide through a air purifier. And,we investigated how reperfusion injury after cerebral ischemia could be affected in superoxide rich environments. Superoxide rich environment activated SOD activity; however, this activity was reduced more after reperfusion in the superoxide rich environment. Histological injury and behavioral malfunction were not so apparent.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

スーパーオキサイドリッチな環境は空気清浄機のために日常的にさらされやすい環境である。障害を与えない程度のスーパーオキサイド負荷はSOD活性に影響を与えスパーオキサイドに対する耐性を増強するかもしれない。この環境下では虚血後再灌流時に多量に発生する組織障害性のあるスーパーオキサイドに対し少なからず影響を与えると考えられる。これらのことからスーパーオキサイドリッチな環境での虚血に対する影響は今後の我々の生活スタイルに関係することであり研究する意義は高く、今後も進めていく内容と思われる。
