| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Mice were subjected to moderate traumatic brain injury induced by controlled cortical impact and received hyperbaric hydrogen therapy at 2 atmospheres for 90 minutes, at 30 minutes after TBI. The TBI+ hyperbaric hydrogen therapy group showed significantly reduced blood brain barrier disruption and brain edema, significantly more numerous residual hippocampal neurons and significantly reduced hyperactivity in behavioral test, comparing the non-treatment TBI group. Hyperbaric hydrogen therapy may be effective for posttraumatic secondary brain injury.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
渉猟しうる限りにおいて、高気圧下に水素ガスを生体に投与する際の影響について報告した論文はこれまでに見当たらない。今回の我々の研究の結果、多くの病態においてきわめて重要な役割を果たしている酸化ストレスの引き金である活性酸素に対して、非常に強力な抗酸化作用を持つ水素分子を高気圧下に投与することによって、効率よく作用させることが可能で、結果として顕著な臓器保護作用を示すことがあきらかになった。さらなる検証を重ねることで、重症頭部外傷をはじめとした多くの難治性疾患の病態において、新たな治療法のひとつとなりうる可能性があり、社会的にもその意義は大きいと思われる。
