Outline of Final Research Achievements

Periostin was strongly expressed in carotid atherosclerotic plaques. Distribution of periostin expression was consistent with that of collagen fibers. Periostin may be associated with carotid plaque formation and fibrosis. Periostin may be a potential therapeutic target for treatment of atherosclerotic carotid stenosis.
Periostin was expressed in tumor stroma of gliomas and meningiomas. Expression level of periostin correlated positively with the WHO tumor grade. Periostin may be involved in the malignant transformation of gliomas and meningiomas. The role of periostin played in these disease should be further researched.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

脳梗塞は高齢化社会での介護が必要な疾患として社会問題となっている。近年、頚動脈狭窄症による脳梗塞が増加している。本研究により、ペリオスチンが頚動脈狭窄病変の形成・増大に関与している可能性が示唆された。また、ペリオスチンは、ある種の脳腫瘍の悪性化にも関与している可能性がある。ペリオスチンの機能を解明することで、脳梗塞や脳腫瘍の治療戦略の発展に役立つと期待できる。
