Outline of Annual Research Achievements

2023年度は、ブータン国において２週間の現地調査を実施したほか、北東インドの宗教と屠畜実践に関わる論考（印刷中）、及びブータン北部高地牧畜民と国家との関わりに関する論考をそれぞれ執筆した（印刷中）。また、国内の研究会での研究発表と意見交換を複数回実施した。現地調査は2024年2月末から２週間ブータン東部地域を中心に実施し、仏教関連の宗教施設での情報収集や在野の信徒による宗教実践に関する聞き取りを行ったほか、ヤク肉の売買を行う高地の牧畜村での参与観察と聞き取りを行った。また、東ブータン東端に生きる人々と国境を共有するインドのアルナーチャル・プラデーシュ州の人々との文化的経済的相互関係の実態を、越境的な親族ネットワークの広がりと国境を超えた商業ネットワークの浸透という点から明らかにしようと試みた。
仏教僧院への聞き取りでは、教育システムに関する情報収集から、インドのチベット仏教僧院への留学を可能とする親族の繋がりや僧侶たちによる帰国後の宗教活動が、村落地域における仏教僧院や寺の総数だけではなく、人々の肉食と屠畜実践にも大きな影響を及ぼしている点が明らかになった。またブータンの僧侶がインドの大僧院で修学する背景には、インド在住の高僧らによる経済的支援があり、それはブータン東部におけるチベット仏教主流派の影響力を強めていた。ブータン東部と北東インド諸州を含む東ヒマラヤ地域における宗教領域は、北部インドのヒンドゥー教の影響よりも南インドに点在する主流派の仏教僧院の影響が大きい地域があり、それはより厳格な戒律とよりグローバルな宗教ネットワークのただ中にこの地域を置くことにつながっていると言えそうだ。

Reason

本研究課題の調査対象国の一つであるブータンではCOVID-19の影響による渡航規制が2022年後半から漸進的に解消し、2023年度には滞在調査を比較的長期間かつ国境地域まで踏み込んで実施できるようになったため、現地調査には大きな進捗がみられた。また、COVID-19パンデミック下での国境地域における人的物的移動の規制は、東ブータンにおけるインド国境地帯の人々の往来や交流を一時的に制約しただけではなく、新たな国境管理のスキームを定着させていることが明らかになったため、これらの点を踏まえた調査の実施ができている。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

調査期間を延長したため、2024年度を最終年度とし、これまで集めた調査データと文献調査を通して研究結果の総括を行い、研究発表および研究論文の形にして出版する予定である。
