| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This project has reconsidered Charles S. Peirce’s semiotics in the contemporary context of the philosophy of mind. This research has shown that Peirce’s scholastic realism has a potential impact on contemporary pragmatists’ discussion about naturalism. As a byproduct of this research, Japanese translation of essential works on pragmatism has greatly advanced.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究では、特に命題的態度をめぐるパース独自の実在論を現代にどのように受肉させられるかという問題を検討した。パースは「スコラ的実在論」という説を主張し、自然界で実際に作用している種々の一般法則は実在のものと見なしている。この考えは現代の標準的な実在論ないし自然主義とは隔たりがある。しかしこの主張は規範学というパース思想独自の考えと密接な関連があり、これを踏まえれば、パースのプラグマティズム思想は現代の心の哲学に対しても、独自の貢献を果たせる。本研究の過程で、ヒュー・プライスらの主張する主体自然主義とパースのスコラ的実在論の関係についてさらなる探究を深める必要を認識した。
