Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In 2022 the main research achievements were two peer reviewed articles in international journals and two online conference presentations. ‘End of Empire Migration as Evacuation and Individual Flight: The Far North of the Japanese Empire, 1945-1947’ is about the action taken by former colonial residents from Karafuto (Sakhalin) to differentiate their circumstances from the media-driven image of the Manchurian repatriate figure. ‘National Belonging and the Production of Neglect in the Japanese Repatriate Figure, 1945-1950’ is about how government policy towards former colonial residents led to a flattening of experiences into a standardised explanation of ‘the repatriate’. This affected how former colonial residents sought to use repatriate identity in their encounters with officials.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Concern about Covid meant that the PI was again unable to travel abroad to use archives and present at international conferences. Instead of using archives located abroad the PI was able to gather some materials by contacting the archivists and requesting a small selection of documents be copied and posted.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In 2023 the PI intends to make a presentation at an international conference to disseminate the findings from the research. The PI also plans to discuss book publishing opportunities with several university presses.
