Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study analyzed how urban migrants from the periphery of the nation-state, who migrated to and settled in mining and industrial cities in Japan as labor force, have experienced the functional transformation of native place communities and human networks as urban minorities in a deindustrialized society. The analysis was conducted from a cultural and social geographical perspective. Specifically, I analyzed the practices of native place associations organized by Okinawa/Amami residents living in mining and industrial cities on the Japanese "mainland" through qualitative research such as observation and interviews, as well as native place association publications, native place media, and other materials to reveal the functional transformation of each hometown association and the dynamics of their identifications.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
