Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study formulated a spatial equilibrium model of stores and distribution centers that explicitly consider the inventory management strategy of retail firms (such as the timing to ordering inventory, lot size and safety stock to prevent the stock-out). With the analysis of the model, this study showed that investment in urban road network affects the location pattern of franchise stores and distribution centers in a city, through the improvement of logistics transportation. This effect has economic benefit to increase the convenience of shopping for consumers. This study also developed methods for the practical application of the spatial model to the actual urban area.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究の学術的な独自性と意義は、商品の需要変動リスクの物流センターへの集約という観点から、道路上の旅行時間と、企業が決定する商店・物流センターの立地の関係を明示的に表現した、立地均衡モデルを定式化した点にある。社会的な意義は、都市内道路整備がもたらすストック効果に関する、新しい知見を得たことである。とりわけ、物流の円滑化が、都市内の商店数の増加を通じて、消費者が居住地の近隣で買い物を行える環境の創出をもたらしていることを明らかにした点は、本研究の主要な成果である。
