Outline of Final Research Achievements

We developed a novel imaging method to visualize the spatial-temporal patterns of activity propagations in autaptic neuron-glial networks utilizing a multipoint scanning two-photon microscopy and optogenetics based on two-photon excitation. We also attempted to visualize the activity propagation patterns at the nanoscale by utilizing super-resolution two-photon STED microscopy.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究では培養細胞系ではあるが、神経・グリア回路網の活動変化パターンを包括的に可視化解析できるイメージング手法を確立した。疾病モデルマウスの脳組織やヒトiPS細胞由来の神経細胞・アストロサイトから構築したオータプス初代培養標本に適用することも可能である。将来的には脳機能の解明だけでなく、神経・グリア回路網を標的とした新規阻害剤や薬剤のスクリーニングなどに貢献できる成果であり、社会的意義も大きい。
