Outline of Final Research Achievements

We found that there are antiporters to uptake cystine, oxidized form of cysteine, into the cells inside in exchange for cysteine persulfide excreted into extracellular space, and probably plays an important role in redox homeostasis in the cells.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

多くの研究により酸化ストレスと疾患との関連が示唆され、抗酸化物質が治療薬として期待されている。しかし一方、抗酸化物質による還元ストレスという健康リスクも懸念される。 本研究成果は還元ストレス/レドックス制御における、新たな仕組みを明らかにしたものであり、還元ストレスに起因する病態の発症メカニズムの解明に繋がると期待される。
