Outline of Final Research Achievements

Associations between muscle stiffness at rest (passive muscle stiffness) and athletic performances have been recently suggested. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the relationship between passive muscle stiffness and explosive performance. I examined whether passive stiffness in the medial gastrocnemius correlated with rate of torque development during the isometric plantar flexion and drop jump performance. These relationships were statistically demonstrated. Furthermore, I examined the effect of 8-week drop jump training on the passive stiffness in the medial gastrocnemius and rate of torque development. As a result, passive muscle stiffness decreased whereas rate of torque development did not change. Taken together, relationship between passive muscle stiffness and explosive performance was indicated in the cross-sectional studies, but it was not in the longitudinal study.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究の横断データでは、筋の安静時弾性と運動パフォーマンスに有意な相関関係が見られた。これらの結果から、競技スポーツの現場においてのタレント発掘や中高齢者の体力測定における運動習慣のスクリーニングとして、筋の安静時弾性の測定を応用できると考えている。筋の安静時弾性の測定に要する時間は、1分以内であり、上記のような大規模測定にも耐えられるという利点がある。
一方、本研究の縦断データでは、筋の安静時弾性の変化に伴う運動パフォーマンスの変化が示されなかった。上記のように、横断データでは筋の安静時弾性と運動パフォーマンスの関係が示されているため、今後は8週間以上の長期間介入の効果を検証する必要がある。
