| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study revealed the organizational features of Japanese conventional tourist association. As motioned in various previous studies, this Japanese-unique organization has not been recognized as destination management organization due to its limited functions, however, some advanced DMO in other countries are also faced on the similar challenges as Japanese tourist associations do. For example, Consorci Turisme de Barcelona, known as one of the most advanced DMO globally, is on the process to stabilize its functions through stronger governance from city government commitment.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
DMOは学術研究と観光政策の現場の双方で最も新しいテーマの1つであるが国内外ともに研究の蓄積が少ない。また既往研究のほとんどが財源論や個別の事業モデルに焦点をあてたものである上、その多くが欧米のDMOの事例紹介に留まっている。他方で、日本に伝統的に存在する観光協会はDMOとの対比を通じて客体化され、多くの場合、先進的なDMOに対して後進的な組織として描かれる。本研究はこうした点に疑問を呈し、DMOとしての観光協会の組織特性の把握を行うとともに、バルセロナやキトといった先進的なDMOへの事務局長インタビュー調査を通じてこれらの先進的「とされる」DMOの組織的課題を浮き彫りにした点に意義がある。
