Outline of Final Research Achievements

With the aim of developing children's interest in and awareness of geographical perspectives, landforms, and geology, we created teaching materials using an exploration-type computer game (Minecraft) and verified their educational effects. The main initiative was a first-year junior high school science class at the Miyagi University of Education Junior High School (Sendai City), using a Minecraft game that reproduced the school and its surrounding paleoenvironment, and setting questions to follow the chronological sequence of the depositional environment and formation of geological strata. The students responded well to the game, which was set in a familiar school setting, and they did not get bored with the knowledge questions. From the results of the questionnaire, it is thought that the game was effective in helping children understand and remember the local geo-history through visual images, along with the positive experience of "it was fun”.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

昨今Minecraftに限らず、バーチャルな世界で「体験」するゲームの利用が若年層でポピュラーなものとなっており、今後も急速に広がっていくと予想される。教育コンテンツとしての利用も当然予想される。本研究はコロナ禍の影響を大きく受け、複数回の繰り返し実習は出来なかったが、2019年3月の宮城教育大学附属中学校での研究授業、その他2019年8月の「女子中高生夏の学校」(国立女性教育会館)での地形と災害に関する実習を通じて、教育用コンテンツの作成のみならず、それを利用・運用していく際の注意点も知る事ができた。研究成果は国際学会を含む学会で発表した他、研究授業について論文に取りまとめた。
