Outline of Final Research Achievements

Using metal complexes possessing two patterns of coordination geometry, we have studied the phase transitions and photon storage efficiency under and after UV-irradiation. We have found a new material that can store a part of photon energy for more than half a year under ambient conditions. The findings will contribute to the scientific community concerning various problems on excitation and relaxation processes during interactions between light and matter.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究成果は、単にエネルギーの高効率利用や変換と貯蔵法に関する新しい技術を一歩実用に近づけたという社会的意義だけではない。物質と光の相互作用の研究において、これまでは現象が速過ぎて、実験的な観測手段がフェムト秒レーザーなどを用いた超高速時間分光しかなかったのに対し、光励起とそれに続く緩和過程の詳細な研究を可能にする試料を与えたことになる。これにより通常の時間分解能を持たない、より正確で詳細な観測手段の数々が適用可能になり、構造解析とそれに基づく理論計算も含めて、光励起と緩和の飛躍的な理解と研究の進展が期待されるという学術的意義も持っている。
