| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In early modern South Asia, classical literary and philosophical texts written mainly in Sanskrit were translated into Persian, the official language of the Mughal Empire, and into various vernacular languages. These translations included works that were relatively faithful to the originals, as well as those with major alterations, and can be appropriately understood as translations in the broad sense discussed in recent translation theory and translation studies. Through the analysis of translated texts produced in the context of various socio-cultural and political-economic factors at play, it is possible to gain a dynamic understanding of the pluralistic culture of South Asia.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
近世南アジアの翻訳とそれが象徴する多元的文化に関する議論は、ムガル帝国のもとでのものを対象とすることが多かったが、ムガル帝国の「辺境」や外部における翻訳に着目する本研究は、南アジア全域をより包括活的に捉えた議論に向けた土台作りに貢献するものと言える。また、サンスクリット語を原典とする地域語文献の述作をあらためて「翻訳」として捉え、ペルシア語への翻訳との比較と連関のなかで捉えようとしたことの意義は大きい。一般的には停滞と宗教的分断の印象が強い南アジア地域について、植民地期近代に先行する近世における動的な文化的交流の実相を具体的に示せたことは社会的にも意義がある。
