Outline of Annual Research Achievements

日米双方の中緯度SuperDARNレーダー装置・観測データを活用し、レーダー運用及びデータ解析環境の共通化を図った上で、地球自転軸と地磁気双極子軸のずれに起因する双方のレーダー観測域の地理的相違性に注目して、以下の課題に取り組む。1) SAPSやSEDに代表される電子密度・電場変動現象の空間・時間分布および地理・地磁気軸オフセット効果の影響。2)太陽風中擾乱やサブストーム現象が地球の磁気圏電離圏電場の空間・時間変動に与える影響。3)各種磁気流体波動の特性および地理・地磁気軸オフセット効果の影響。特に1分程度の短時間で劇的に変動する現象の特性およびその発生過程を明らかにすることが本研究課題の主要な目的である。
当該年度は日本側研究者2名をSuperDARN国際会議(南アフリカ)に派遣し、1名を米国地球物理学連合会議に拝見した。並行してオンラインによる研究交流・成果発表を代わりに実施した。
また、北海道陸別町に設置したSuperDARN北海道-陸別第一・第二レーダーの運用を継続して実施するとともに、別予算と併用してSuperDARNレーダー次世代受信機の開発を進め。ハードウェアについてはデータ処理用のコンピュータ以外は作成をほぼ完了し、動作試験を進めた。さらには名古屋大学が陸別に設置した既存のレーダーをはじめとするSuperDARNデータを活用した、日米の共同研究者を共著とする主な論文として、火山噴火による電離圏擾乱に関するものが1編、太陽風擾乱によるSudden Commencement(急始型電磁気擾乱)に関するものが1編出版された。

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

2023年度は前年度に引き続き、直接相手側機関を訪問しての共同研究を実施したり、国際会議において同時に参加したアメリカ側の研究者と今後の共同研究計画の進め方について議論を行うことができなかったが、SuperDARN国際会議や米国地球物理学連合会議でアメリカ側の研究者との議論を実施したり、オンライン会議や電子メールを活用することにより、共同研究を推進することができた。実際に成果論文が出版され、オンライン国際・国内会議における発表が多くなされた。
日本国内ではSuperDARN北海道-陸別第一・第二レーダーの運用を継続してデータを蓄積し、本格的な共同研究に備えるとともに、SuperDARNレーダー次世代受信機の開発を一段と進めることができた。
2020年2月末頃から続いていたCOVID-19ウィルスの影響はほぼ終息しているが、2023年度は円安およびアメリカ国内における物価高騰などで海外渡航が困難な状況にあり、出張は最低人数に限られていた。当該研究期間を1年延長した2024年度には状況が改善すると期待される。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

可能な手段を活用して日米間の共同研究を進める。円安や米国内の物価高で先方への出張は非常に困難な状況にあるが、今後の状況の改善を見計らった上で日本側の研究者の共同研究機関のバージニア工科大学への派遣や、国内外で行われる国際会議への参加を積極的に進めるのと並行して、電子メールやオンライン会議等を通じて共通環境の整備を推進するとともに、その基盤の上で共同研究をさらに進める。
このように考えられる手段を活用して共通のレーダー運用・データ解析環境をより一層整備した上で、共同研究を進めていく。
一方で、日本国内でのSuperDARN観測を継続するとともに、SuperDARNレーダー次世代受信機の開発を進め、できるだけ早い時期(順調に行けば今年度)の本運用を目指す。アメリカ側の同様の機器の開発・運用状況について先方と密に連絡を取り合うことで能率的な情報交換を行っていく。
