Research Abstract |
This study examines the invention and development of Malaysia's transnational and English-medium private higher education and its effects on social relations and networks. What may be referred to as the Malaysian model of higher education has impacted ethnic relations, social classes and nationalism in Malaysia as well as patterns of migration of students between Asia and the West. Moreover, the model is now being diffused to other (mostly, developing) countries. Particular attention is drawn to multicultural and multilingual Malaysians who play the role of cultural intermediaries in this process. The study also suggests that the Englishization of higher education works as a medium in connecting Malaysia's ethnicities to broader, transnational categories of 'civilizations'.
