Research Abstract |
Until unexpected bankruptcy inevitably weakened cultural activities, economic prosperity helped produce a Celtic cultural resurgence in the UK and Ireland, and changed the Celtic areas' relationship to England. My purpose was to understand this cultural situation, and to investigate its impact on literary productsmainly of Ireland. Constance Markievicz and Elizabeth Bowen are key figures to consider when exploring the Irish/English relationship from the beginning of the 20th century up tothe present. They each represent both cultures in one person. Their positions in Irishwomen's history also shed light upon 'Celtic resilience.'
