Research Abstract |
This four-year study is an attempt to extensively collect the metaphoric uses of English animal terms and to clarify the structural nature of those words. The two researchers have published 20 articles on "animal metaphor in English," presenting many intertwined relations among animal names together with their hyponyms and related words when they are metaphorically used. As for case studies, they also discuss symbolic and metaphoric uses of animal terms in Shakespeare and Milton. Based on the intensive studies of canine, feline, avian, and entomological terms, their arguments throw light on several aspects of synonymity and antonimity among English animal names hitherto unnoticed.
