Research Abstract |
The Northern territories issue is well known in Japan as a Russo-Japanese territorial dispute, which has been not resolved since the end of WWII. "The Northern territories are Japanese inherent territories, therefore they must be returned to Japan"-this discourse is widely accepted by Japanese people, though it is no more than a national myth formed in 1970s. This research clarifies the process of a formation of the myth, focusing on the history of the Kuril Islands, the movement of calling for the return of Northern territories, the district of Nemuro located in the borderland and the views of USSR/Russia.
