Research Abstract |
Distribution and regional characteristics of ancient historical documents excavated from Saikaido region, current Kyushu area, were studied. In the northern Kyushu area, historical documents started to appear in the 7th century and spread out in the 8th century. In the middle Kyushu, however, they came into being in the late 8th century, and in the southern Kyushu, in the 9th century. Mokkan, or wooden tablets, distributed mainly around Dazaifu, local government of Kyushu area located in the northern Kyushu, and were seldom found from the middle and southern Kyushu. Bokushodoki, or pottery with ink inscriptions, was mainly excavated from the sites of administrative institutions, temples or state-operated factories in the northern Kyushu, while, it was often found from the settlements of construction workers of those facilities in the middle Kyushu, and from the residences of influential people along with factories in the southern area. Those indicate that distribution of ancient historical documents is related to the regional development and economic activities of the early Heian Period.
