Research Abstract |
Possibility of spatial and generational expansion of pioneering revitalization movement in a rural depopulated community was investigated by participant observation. In the movement, the traditional nature of the community characterized by strong conservativeness, exclusiveness and dominance by a few rich persons was challenged so that it was transformed into grass-root participative democracy. We found that new public space could be developed by establishing participative democracy system in each old village that had been a governmental unit until 1930' and still remained solidarity. It was also found that exchange program with urban areas could transmit the spirit nurtured by the movement above to young people living in the urban areas.
