Research Abstract

マイネルト基底核などの皮質下神経核は大脳皮質へ作用して、睡眠-覚醒を制御する。従来の研究の観測対象は大脳皮質の脳波や血流、アセチルコリン放出量であった。そのため、マイネルト基底核が大脳皮質のグリア細胞へ与える作用はほとんど知られていない。本研究はin vivo2光子顕微鏡を用いることで、生きた動物個体の大脳皮質に存在する神経細胞のみならずグリア細胞の活動も計測した。その結果、マイネルト基底核の活動が、大脳皮質神経細胞だけでなく、グリア細胞の細胞内カルシウム濃度も上昇させることを発見した。
