Research Abstract |
In the publication of my book, Between Jewish and Israel : the Aporia of Nation (Seidosha, 2008), I discussed the binational thought by two German-Jewish philosophers, Martin Buber and Hannah Arendt, who sought after the coexistence of Jews and Arabs in Palestine. Besides, I treated several liberal Jewish thinkers like Isaiah Berlin, Judith Butler, Michael Waltzer, who somehow criticized the military occupation by Israel government but supported the idea of Zionism or the Jewish State. Meanwhile, I visited Israel and Palestine (mainly Haifa Univ., Hebrew Univ., Alternative Information Center), collecting documentary materials, as well as invited a very important professor, Kais Firro (Haifa Univ.) for workshops. Then I proceeded my research on the same theme. As the result, I published an article about the thoughts and activities of Judah Magnes, the first president of Hebrew Univ. and his colleagues who insisted on the coexistence with Arab people at the same time keeping their own Jewish identity before the foundation of Israel as a Jewish State. Besides, I participated in a collaborative project which was trying to examine the crossing-borders by nations and the coexistence from the viewpoint of "diaspora", where I wrote another article to seek both the historical significance and the contemporary possibility of binationalism.
