| Research Abstract |
英語には、N+V (to baby-sit), A+V (to rough-ride), V+V (to dive-bomb), P+V (to back-cut), V+A (to bleach-white)のように、一見すると複合(compounding, 語と語を連結して新しい語を作る操作)によって作られたように見える動詞が存在するが、屈折、意味をはじめとするいくつかの文法上の特徴から、これらのいずれの型も真の複合語ではなく、何らかの他の文法形式(例えばN+V型, A+V型なら対応する複合名詞、複合形容詞)から逆形成、転換、倒置、語彙化などの操作によって派生された動詞であるいえる。よって、英語では、構成要素の範疇に関わらず、体系的に複合動詞を作ることができないと結論できる。
