Research Abstract |
四種硫黄同位体分析法の高精度分析を確立し,岩石試料・湖水試料・微生物培養実験試料のそれぞれに適用した結果次のような事が明らかになった。35億年前の硫酸塩鉱物に含まれる硫化物の四種同位体組成から当時、硫酸還元菌が活動した証拠を得た。一方、光合成硫黄細菌活動の類似環境として現在の成層湖において昨年から湖水の硫酸・硫化水素の観測および採取試料の培養実験を行って来たが、その結果、硫黄細菌の光合成活動が活発な夏の成層期には湖水中で硫酸還元と硫黄の酸化が生じていることが明らかになった。さらに、その期間は特異な四種同位体分別が見られる事から、存在度の低い^<36>Sの分析を高精度に行う事によって過去の嫌気光合成生物による硫黄酸化活動を検知できる可能性を示唆する結果となった。
